Your body and future technologies will be increasingly intertwined in the future. The smaller computers can be built, the larger the area of application in which these computers can be used.
Computers designed to run only a single program nowadays already can be incredibly small. And the smaller the computers are, the easier it is to find a pitch for them in the body.
In the next decade, therefore, the boundary between technology and the body will become increasingly blurred. Particularly in surgery, technology will play a more and more important role. People with spinal cord injury can hope for successful technology applications making them able to walk again.
With the help of sensors that monitor your body 24/4, body examination and disease treatment will be completely different from nowadays methods. Read on this page about what we can expect in the near future.

On moments we use keys to open a door, passwords to get access to our email account or a 2-step verification to wire money to someone, Amal Graafstra uses his hands. In these hands he implanted 4 sensors. Amal never needs a key anymore to enter his home, to open and drive his car. He doesn't need a password to get into his email account nor does he need one to send money over the internet. The only thing he has to do is to swipe his hands with 4 NFC and RFID sensors in them. By doing this he can always identify himself. He built in this technology in a rifle. Nobody can use this weapon since the only identification method to unlock it is to hold Amal's hand near to the rifle. Watch the short video of Amal above to see how this technology works.

Big Contact Lens is Watching You.

In the picture above you see one. Sensors are integrated in a contact lens, analyzing tear fluid constantly. Due to an internet connection by a built-in wifi antenna the contact lens wearer gets data about his/her health 24/7 in real time. A continuous data stream can inform the wearer about blood sugar level, contaminations and allergenic agents. In case it is not desired to get all these data, the data can be sent to a doctor who will call the moment something is not okay.

And what do you think about sensors in your toilet,  analyzing your ‘once personal belongings’ every time you leave them behind in your bathroom? The moment you have an intestine issue your doctor will call you for an appointment.

Wired Mind Power.

We talked already about ​Amal Graafstra, the man with sensors in his hand. We also talked about ver small in-body sensors, supporting handicapped people. Now have a look at these two boys who are connected to each other through a computer. Both have electrodes on their head and only by thinking about it, they can move a ball over a table. Have a look at these kids playing Mindball and you know what I'm talking about.

Wireless Mind Power.

Now, you might think that this is not very exciting. Then try to imagine this: tiny sensors, penetrating your cells, wirelessly communicating with your brain. You think about a question and immediately you get the answer from the internet. Ray Kurzweil (inventor at Google) expects this wireless human-machine connection to be real by 2035.


This Might Sound Like Science-Fiction 

Next to the cognitive aspect this direct wireless connection might play an important part in mental healthcare as well. Perhaps it still sounds a bit like science-fiction but if sensors may detect a coming burnout in form of "unusual / unwished neurological brain activity" it would be great to get a warning, long before the burnout makes you sick during weeks / months.

Your future comes to you @ an incredible speed. And this will undoubtedly come with many benefits for us. But for every upside there's a downside. So, we will have to be cautious about new developments. The fact that sensors in our brain can read our mind and share these thoughts globally for instance, is something that needs a very critical social and political discussion.  Just remember the movie "What Women Want" with Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt and ask yourself if we want other people to read our thoughts. Reading the Human Genome.

Something else: in 2001 we could have a complete reading of your genome, containing 30,000 genes. It cost you $ 100,000,000 and you had to wait a few weeks before the reading was done. Nowadays you have a reading in just a few hours for $ 1,000. Meanwhile more and more people know all about their genome; what kind of disease they might get and how old they could turn before passing away.

Writing the Human Genome.

But more is possible than reading DNA. Scientists can place (write) your DNA in a blank cell and let organs grow out of it. Unfortunately it isn't possible yet with all the organs of a human body. Still, imagine what a blessing this is for people with kidney failure, liver cirrhosis or a cardiovascular disease. These people won't have to wait for a donor anymore. No more stressful years, waiting for the right organ.  


Repairing the Human Genome.

So far so good. But now it is getting exciting. After reading and writing a new technology is in development. It's called the Crispr Technology. It's like editing (cutting and pasting) in Word.  A damaged part of your DNA will be cut out and replaced by a part that is intact. No need to go too much into details, but this method will make treatment for incurable diseases possible. It's like fixing software bugs. You have hereditary diseases in your family? With this technology, you, your children and grandchildren will never have to fear for future outbreaks of these diseases anymore.
