What causes Diabetes ?

Diabetes Type 1
Diabetes Type 1 occurs when the immune system destroys the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. Various hormones are produced in these islands, including Insulin, which regulates the blood sugar balance in our blood.
Scientists assume that diabetes type 1 has hereditary (DNA errors) and environmental (viruses) causes. Diabetes Type 1 is associated with an increased risk of cancer.

Diabetes Type 2
Overweight in combination with inactivity is the main reason to develop Diabetes Type 2. Its pre-stage is insulin resistance caused by the intake of carbohydrate-rich food.
If you want to know whether your weight puts you at risk for type 2 diabetes, then use the calculator below to check your Body Mass Index (BMI).

Insuline resistance
Receptors in a healthy blood sugar household take in insulin with blood sugar bound to it. Due to an excessive supply of insulin with blood sugar, the receptors lose the capacity to bind blood sugar. This is called insuline resistance.

Genes and family history
Type 1 Diabetes usually has a genetic cause. That is why sometimes whole families are affected by this disease. Below you can see in which racial/ethnic groups it occurs most.
African Americans
Asian Americans
Pacific Islanders
Alaska Natives Hispanics / Latinos
American Indians
Native Hawaiians
Preventing Diabetes
Lose weight and keep it off
Losing weight is the best way to prevent diabetes. Trying to lose 5% to 7% of your starting weight is already great.
Be more active
Don't exaggerate, because then you're gonna give up at some point. But at least try to be active for 30 minutes 5 times a week. If you haven't moved at all for a long time, it is advisable to speak to your doctor first.
Eat healthy food
Losing weight means, among other things, eating less. This works much better when you eat from a small plate. Choose high-fibre foods with little fat and sugar and. with an eye on your heart condition, make sure you eat unsaturated fats.
